Marilyn Hotchkiss` Ballroom Dancing and Charm School (DVD) MARILYN HOTCHKISS` BALLROOM DANCING AND CHARM SCHOOL begins with a fated meeting, as Frank (Robert Carlyle) pulls over to aid a car-crash victim, Steve (John Goodman), who is slowly dying by the side of the road. Frank is still coming to terms with his wife`s suicide, so when Steve spins him a story about the dance school of the title, he decides to attend classes himself. Steve informs Frank that he was in love with a girl named Lisa (Camryn Manheim), who danced at the school when he was a 12-year-old boy. Now, some 40 years later, Frank was on his way to the school to meet her again, hoping to rekindle their flame. Director Randall Miller (CLASS ACT) neatly divides the story into three parts, providing flashbacks to flesh out Steve`s story, showing Frank`s desperate attempts--along with a paramedic team--to keep Steve alive, ballroom dancing and schools and illustrating what happens when Frank makes his way to the school. As the story pings back ballroom dancing and schools and forth, Frank arrives at the school intending to tell Lisa what happened to Steve, but fails to find her. What Frank does find, however, is Meredith (Marisa Tomei), a woman he hopes will fill in the aching gap left by the death of his wife. As Frank slowly falls in love with Meredith while continuing his search for Lisa, the film gently arcs through some sentimental material that should appeal to viewers who enjoy a good tearjerker. Mad Hot Ballroom (DVD) Tango, foxtrot, swing, rumba, ballroom dancing and schools and meringue may seem to represent the last vestiges of a dying art to some, but director Marilyn Agrelo proves this is far from true in MAD HOT BALLROOM. Agrelo reveals that the New York City public school system runs a ballroom dance program for fifth graders, in which these former preserves of the adult world are given a new lease on life by some enthusiastic little characters. The film follows students at three schools in the neighborhoods of Tribeca, Bensonhurst, ballroom dancing and schools and Washington Heights, with Agrelo training her cameras on the kids` lives both inside ballroom dancing and schools and outside of the classroom. The students are united by a zeal for the ballroom dancing lessons, which builds over a 10-week period ballroom dancing and schools and culminates in a competition to find the school that has produced the best dancers in the city. As the teachers gently cajole their students to learn the intricacies of the various disciplines, Agrelo intersperses classroom footage with the students` musings on life; many of these reveal a remarkable maturity. Gender ballroom dancing and schools and race boundaries disappear as focus on the competition consumes the students` energy, ballroom dancing and schools and the teachers are brought to tears as they see their prodigies turning into what one teacher touchingly terms little ladies ballroom dancing and schools and gentlemen. As the pitter-patter of tiny toes scuttles across the ballroom floor in the competition`s final stages, it`s impossible not to get swept up in the action. One of Agrelo`s cameramen is caught grinning in an affectionate, almost paternal manner as he accidentally wanders into the frame while filming. One of 2005`s most uplifting slices of cinema, MAD HOT BALLROOM is a joyous, life-affirming experience. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.
