MARILYN HOTCHKISS` BALLROOM DANCING AND CHARM SCHOOL begins with a fated meeting, as Frank (Robert Carlyle) pulls over to aid a car-crash victim, Steve (John Goodman), who is slowly dying by the side of the road. Frank is still coming to terms with his wife`s suicide, so when Steve spins him a story about the dance school of the title, he decides to attend classes himself. Steve informs Frank that he was in love with a girl named Lisa (Camryn Manheim), who danced at the school when he was a 12-year-old boy. Now, some 40 years later, Frank was on his way to the school to meet her again, hoping to rekindle their flame. Director Randall Miller (CLASS ACT) neatly divides the story into three parts, providing flashbacks to flesh out Steve`s story, showing Frank`s desperate attempts--along with a paramedic team--to keep Steve alive, ballroom dancing and charm school and illustrating what happens when Frank makes his way to the school. As the story pings back ballroom dancing and charm school and forth, Frank arrives at the school intending to tell Lisa what happened to Steve, but fails to find her. What Frank does find, however, is Meredith (Marisa Tomei), a woman he hopes will fill in the aching gap left by the death of his wife. As Frank slowly falls in love with Meredith while continuing his search for Lisa, the film gently arcs through some sentimental material that should appeal to viewers who enjoy a good tearjerker. Based on a true story, the film centers on the dashing Pierre Dulaine, an idealistic New York City ballroom dancer who was the subject of the runaway documentary hit MAD HOT BALLROOM (2005). After spying the desperate ballroom dancing and charm school and violent actions of a young ballroom dancing and charm school and angry high schooler named Rock, Dulaine becomes intent on channeling his talent into the service of troubled youth, ballroom dancing and charm school and almost immediately approaches Rock?s tough but well-meaning high school principal (the always radiant Alfre Woodward) with the idea of teaching ballroom dancing to detention students. Were it not for the fact that this is a story pulled from real life, the premise might ring false; the fact that it actually happened only makes the movie more powerful. Though at first greeted with the expected disdain ballroom dancing and charm school and cynicism by his street-hardened students--gang member Ramos, tough-as-nails Larhette, charming but overweight Monster, ballroom dancing and charm school and the lone white boy Kurd--all of them become transformed into dedicated, graceful, ballroom dancing and charm school and talented dancers, performing the tango ballroom dancing and charm school and rumba as confidently as they once initiated fistfights. Along with learning the technical steps of the ballroom, these youngsters are also exposed to their toe-tapping teacher?s wisdom about life, learning everything from how to treat a lady to how to disengage from pointless violence. Former music-video director Liz Friedlander brings a kinetic energy to the film, ballroom dancing and charm school and the pulsating hip-hop soundtrack is designed to attract youthful viewers.
